5 Reasons why pet doors are essential

If you have a cat or a dog and you’ve been considering the pros and cons of pet doors here are 5 reasons why pet doors are essential to you and your pet’s safety and well being.

1. AVOIDING LITTLE SMELLY ACCIDENTS IN THE HOME.

The RSPCA has some great suggestions for house training your puppy or adult dog. Including having a puppy proof outdoor area with plenty of room for playing, exercise and toileting. As well as a puppy proof area inside for when your puppy or dog need to be unsupervised.

But there is one key element that brings together your pet’s indoor and outdoor worlds to allow your pet to toilet freely without you. It’s a pet door. Pets will naturally want to keep their eating and sleeping places free from toileting. By providing them access to a safe outside area will promote this natural instinct and help avoid a smelly mess inside.

It can also help promote better bladder health for your pets from having to ‘hold it’ for too long.

2. BOREDOM BECOMES A THING OF THE PAST

If your pet spends most of his time inside then boredom can become a real issue. Pets who can let themselves in and out of the house tend to be less destructive in the home.

Not sure if you’ve seen the 2016 animation movie ‘The secret life of pets’ where the cats and dogs in an apartment block wait for their owners to leave before running amok inside. Well – it does make me wonder what our pets get up to in our absence. Giving them access to the outdoors provides not only a change of scenery but also a new environment to explore during the day.

3. ESCAPING THE HEAT

Here in Australia our summer’s can get pretty damn hot. So when you’re not home what do you do – do you leave your pet indoors or do you let them out.

With a pet door – you don’t have to choose. Your pet can choose where the best relief from the sun is. And the great thing is your home remains secure. There’s no need to leave doors ajar or windows open. So you can get on with your day without worrying about getting back home to let your precious pooch or pussy cat out.

4. NO MORE SCRATCHING AT THE DOOR

Now that your pet can let himself in and out – there’s no need for you to get up every time they need to go outside. That’s not just convenient for you. It also means less whining to go outside and less scratching on the door. Imagine the extra sleep you’ll get knowing you don’t have to get up in the middle of the night for a toilet break. Not to mention no more scratch marks on your windows and doors!

5. YOUR CAN EVEN CONTROL YOUR PET’S ACCESS

With the different locking mechanisms on your pet door you get to control your pet’s access. By leaving the mechanism unlocked your pet has the freedom to move inside and out as it chooses. Alternatively you can change the locking mechanism to let your pet in but not out; out but not in; or fully lock it to not let your pet in or out. It’s up to you.

Of course a pre-requisite for a pet door to work effectively is a safe outdoor area for your pet to move to. Also the right sized pet door. Check out my article on “Will My Dog Fit Through The Pet Door?”

We recommend and install Transcat Pet Doors, which are designed specifically for glass windows and doors. These high quality doors are made from tough polycarbonate plastic and unlike some other pet doors have a seamless and unobtrusive design.
